The Challenger is one of the most recognizable Mopar E-Body vehicles in existence. With a characteristic long, sculpted hood and wide stance, the Challenger quickly established itself as an iconic symbol of not only American muscle but of our culture as a whole. This is especially true of convertible versions which are extremely rare. For that reason, any 71 Challenger convertible is a car to be coveted.
As such, when this example was offered on craigslist in Duluth, Minnesota it was met with an enthusiastic response and bidding war. The end result was this classic Challenger convertible cruising around on a new set of 15” Dodge rally wheels shod with BF Goodrich rubber for a truly period-correct look.
After a successful launch in 1970, the Challenger would see a drop-off in sales the following year. As a result, the Challenger convertible was only produced in small numbers for 1971. This example is one of just about 1800 Challenger convertibles built that year and the only one we’ve seen for sale on Craigslist. Powering this Challenger convertible is a stock 225ci slant-six mated to a rebuilt A903/904 three-speed automatic transmission. The engine is said to run well and put down plenty of power to the rear wheels via a pair of 2-barrel carburetors.
The exterior is finished in a beautiful shade of bright blue that looks incredible against the white “R/T” style stripes and soft top. The paintwork is reportedly laser straight and shows a nice shine. Opening the twin doors reveals a stunning white vinyl interior with black-trimmed bucket seats and a full center console. A retro-style AM/FM digital stereo was fitted to this vehicle, along with factory gauges and a heater and defroster.
This rare Challenger convertible is loaded with features which make it as comfortable as it is fast. Options include a power steering system, power windows, a power convertible top and a heater/defroster. This Challenger is also equipped with a Rallye instrument cluster with a 150 mph speedometer, 8,000 rpm tachometer and a oil pressure gauge.
Topping things off is a nice-sounding dual exhaust with TTI headers that’s sure to please those who enjoy a throaty, responsive drive. Riding on a set of BF Goodrich tires, this Challenger drives just like it looks.
The 71 Challenger is a true legend of the muscle car era, and this example is certainly a head-turner. It is an incredibly rare convertible version and will surely appreciate in value over time.
